️1. Linen – thick, skin-creasing, heavy, uncomfortable.
NO. This is an opinion that has been around since the old days, when ancient linen or canvas resembled armour or a potato sack. Modern linen comes in a variety of thicknesses, so when choosing a linen garment you should look at the thickness and density of the fabric. You touch it, and it is clear: is it thin, does it show through, is it soft, is it really, as they say, breathable and will it allow the skin to breathe as much as possible. However, if you buy online, then you won’t be able to touch. This means that you should be guided by this parameter – weight (grammage), which is measured in g/sqm. For summer clothing, 185, 200 or 205 g/sq.m. linen is ideal.
- Linen clothes shrink from washing.
Yes and no. If your garment is made of softened (washed with special technology) linen, it may shrink by as little as 1-2% over time. Natural unsoftened linen, on the other hand, can shrink by up to 7% when washed.
Moreover, linen clothing, like other clothing, has its own care rules. So if you wash a linen dress at a temperature above 40°C and wring it out at high speed, it will shrink several sizes, just like any other fabric.
3️. It is impossible to iron clothes made of natural linen.
NO. This is the belief of those who are not familiar with the properties and care of linen. First of all, a wrinkled linen garment is the natural state, quality and characteristic of such fabric. However, if you want a smooth, neat-looking garment, don’t wring it out, don’t over-dry it, and use steam or special ironing aids or fabric stiffeners when ironing from the wrong side of the garment.
If you are struggling with ironing linen, choose a fabric with a linen content of around 50%. Such semi-linen fabrics (together with cotton or viscose) will be a joke for your iron.
