How do I care for pearl jewellery?

If pearls are not properly cared for and worn, they can change colour, lose their lustre, crumble, crack, show stains or scratches. But a few rules will help keep them looking attractive for years to come:

Pearls are affected by chemicals and should be protected from perfumes, soaps, creams and cleaning products. So even when washing your hands, take off rings and bracelets with pearls.

It is recommended to keep pearl jewellery in a linen or cotton bag separate from other jewellery. A closed box is not suitable as pearls like to “breathe”.

For pearl jewellery, gently clean each individual pearl with a piece of very soft cloth, preferably after each jewellery piece. You can even add a drop of olive oil.

High temperatures, heat, fire and steam can discolour or otherwise damage pearls.

Don’t be surprised if your pearls have changed colour from sweat – it can happen.

Vinegar, lemon juice, essential oils, hairspray and even perfume are enemies of pearls. Therefore, breathe on areas that won’t touch the jewellery and wear them after you’ve worn them.

And one more important tip: try to accessorise with pearls as often as possible, so they don’t have to wait for years!
