How do I tell the difference between natural and fake silk?

It’s easy to tell the difference between real and fake silk. It is the responsibility of every seller to inform the buyer when a product is 100% silk and when it is unnatural. But here’s how you can easily find out for yourself:

All you need to do is light a few threads of that fabric with a lighter. Real silk will burn with a flame and give off the smell of burning hair and wool. Polyester, unlike silk, will melt unwillingly, viscose will smell and stink like burnt paper and plastic.

A burnt piece of silk rubbed between your fingers will crumble like ash, which is not the case with artificial silk.

Putting natural silk against your cheek instantly warms the fabric, which is not the case with artificial silk – it stays as cool as it was before.

Natural silk fabrics will be soft on both sides, unlike synthetic fabrics where you would expect roughness on the wrong side.

Water droplets will glide easily over the silk surface without getting wet and can be carelessly wiped off with your hand. The opposite is true for rayon, which will absorb any liquid that leaves a stain.
